Winter in Lake Tahoe makes for a unique and gorgeous family photoshoot location. Sadly, we haven't had much snow at all this year in the Reno and Lake Tahoe area, but fortunately we don't need a lot of snow to make for a magical winter scene.
Our most recent winter family portrait session we made the small trek up to Tahoe Meadows and got some gorgeous shots amongst the snow and pine trees. Check out the photos below to see some of the shots we got!
A family photoshoot in the snow is a unique experience that also makes for the most beautiful artwork for your home. Below we'll share some tips and ideas for your perfect family photoshoot in the snow! Of course, when you work with Ezell Images, we will take care of all of the planning for you.
Plan ahead: Before heading out for your family photoshoot, we want to make sure to plan ahead. We will discuss all of the details at your consultation to ensure we know the exact location, wardrobe, and time of day. We help you decide which location you want to shoot in, and check the snow and weather conditions.
Choose outfits that are warm, comfortable, and stylish, and coordinate them with your family members. Lastly, plan the timing of the photoshoot to ensure the best light and weather conditions.
Wardrobe: Neutral notes work beautifully in the snow. Your family will pop off the white background, so incorporating colors as black, cream, camel, navy, and forest green all work very well.
Depending on your home decor, you may decide to incorporate a splash of color that would coordinate well when you hang your portraits on the wall. We will help you with all of this as well help you prepare for your session. You can check out our wardrobe guide at ezellimages.com/portrait-prep.
Set the scene: When shooting in the snow, the scenery is everything. Most of our snowy family portrait sessions are all about the gorgeous trees, snow, and mountains in the background. The natural elements such as the trees, rocks, and mountains to add depth and texture to your photos. The snow provides a beautiful backdrop and makes for the beautiful setting that leaves you and your family popping from the simple background.
Capture candid moments: Although posed shots are beautiful, sometimes the most precious moments are captured when your family is unaware of the camera. We encourage natural interactions between your family members, which results in candid and spontaneous moments. This may be capturing your children's wonder and amazement as they play with snow. We also love to encourage our families to incorporate activity such as skiing, snowboarding, sledding, and snowshoeing.
Embrace the cold: A family photoshoot in the snow is not for the faint of heart. The cold can be daunting, but it's also an opportunity to have some fun with your family members. Embracing the cold by throwing snowballs, building snowmen, and making snow angels. Emotions are an essential aspect of any photoshoot, and laughter, joy, and excitement will make for some incredible photos.
Coming ready to your sessions with the right preparation will make your experience far more pleasant. Hats, gloves, waterproof boots, and extra layers make for a more pleasant session in which you and your family members will be able to get more photos as you can hang for longer. Hand warmers, extra dry clothes, warm cocoa or coffee in the car, and blankets are all great things to think about having on hand.
Hire a professional: Last but not least, hiring a professional photographer will make your family photoshoot in the snow a memorable and stress-free experience. A professional photographer has the expertise, equipment, and vision to capture beautiful, high-quality photos while guiding you through the process. They can also give you advice on location, time, and outfits, and ensure that everyone is comfortable and relaxed during the photoshoot.
